New Terms Added to the Online Thesaurus of Psychological Index Terms

In 2010 we have added 96 new postable terms, as well as a significant number of nonpostable terms, status changes, and scope notes. All new terms are mapped back to relevant records in APA's databases to ensure user’s access to historical content.

The 2010 update to the Thesaurus of Psychological Index Terms reflects PsycINFO's expanding coverage and the multidisciplinary nature of the research, particularly in the areas of Neuropsychology (including Neuroanatomy and Neurotransmission), Occupations and Employment, and Computer Applications and Information. New and refined index terms in these areas (as well as other core psychology subjects) will offer researchers greater precision in retrieving the content they need.

New terms were gathered in several ways, including reviewing user suggestions, and analyzing content from newly indexed journals within PsycINFO. The terms will be available as part of the 2010 reload. Check with your platform vendor for more information.

Here's what's new with this update:

  • 96 new postable or "preferred" terms
  • 69 new nonpostable or "used for" cross-referencing terms
  • 7 further status changes
  • Added 137 new scope notes
  • New terms were mapped back to all relevant records in APA's databases to ensure user's access to historical content

Much like previous updates, adding new terminology changes the hierarchical structure of related terms. These changes will allow users to broaden or narrow their search by "climbing" up or down the hierarchy, or jumping through the related terms list.
