A Visit to Dallas
In late January, several staff from APA packed their cowboy boots and ten-gallon hats and flew down to Dallas for the 2012 ALA Midwinter Meeting.
APA staff hosted our annual Librarians Roundtable Breakfast on Sunday, January 22, and our Brunch & Learn session on Monday, January 23 — but we also debuted a brand-new booth in the exhibit hall.
The booth provides opportunities for users to get a first-hand experience with APA's mobile apps and makes it easy to host small group meetings with librarians. It's spacious and gives us demo stations that are comfortable for one-to-one or group product demonstrations.
The Librarians Roundtable Breakfast provides APA staff an opportunity to talk directly with librarians in an informal environment. Linda Beebe, PsycINFO's Senior Director, introduced several APA initiatives, including this year's PsycINFO® reload and previewed a new journal that APA Journals is developing. (You'll hear more about that in an upcoming issue.) We also talked about the use of discovery tools and learning management systems.
If you have not attended in the past, the Librarians Roundtable Breakfast gives participants an opportunity to interact with the content development team from PsycINFO, share what's happening at their library, and gain insight into product development and training activities at APA.
The Roundtable is also structured with plenty of time for group discussion. In the past decade we have learned a lot from our participants about the library environment, and what you need to make electronic products accessible within your institution.
On Monday morning, PsycINFO Customer Relations training specialist Alison Cody presented the annual Midwinter Brunch & Learn program to more than 30 attendees. The session included content updates on APA's databases, including demonstrations of PsycTESTS® and PsycTHERAPY®. Search demonstrations on the major vendor platforms demonstrated a variety of features, fields and limiters, and gave attendees a sense of how PsycINFO looks and feels on all of the major interfaces: EBSCOhost, ProQuest, OvidSP, and APA PsycNET®.
The Brunch and Learn includes ample time for questions and answers, and all guests left with a flash drive preloaded with information about training materials available through the APA Databases and Electronic Products Training Institute (ADEPT), as well as the slides used during the presentation. (A limited number of the flash drives are still available. To request one, please contact Alison Cody.)

If you missed our events at ALA Midwinter this year, you still have plenty of opportunities to catch us! We will reprise our Librarians Roundtable Breakfast and Brunch & Learn sessions at ALA Annual in Anaheim, and staff will be attending a variety of other conferences throughout the year.
