Training and Search Materials Round Up

Take a look at some of the new research aides we've developed, including platform-specific customizable PsycTESTS guides and new Topic Guides, as well as information on trainings at upcoming conferences.

In the fall, the APA trainers you encountered throughout the spring and summer conference season have a chance to sit down and start sifting through all the great ideas and feedback you share with us at our live training sessions. This fall, we were hard at work on two types of search guides: PsycTESTS guides and topic guides

Getting Started with PsycTESTS

In the last newsletter issue of 2013, we reported on the development of a new handout for PsycTESTS®.

We are very pleased to announce that a version of this search guide is now available for each of the major vendor platforms

  • APA PsycNET®
  • EBSCOhost
  • ProQuest
  • OvidSP

You'll find them on our Search Guides page.

This PDF handout presents key information about PsycTESTS in an easy-to-follow Q & A format, and most answers are illustrated with screenshots. This enables the new user to treat the handout as a self-paced training course, while also ensuring that the document is an easy reference tool for someone more familiar with the database.

At the end of the guide, we've left room for you to include contact information for your reference desk. The versions linked above leave that section blank, so you can stamp, label or write in as needed.

For a customized file with your reference desk contact information embedded, contact us. Let us know what platform you use to access PsycTESTS and what information you'd like included. Note that the space available is limited, but is more than enough to include the name of your reference service desk, phone number, email and URL for links to chat services, consultation information, and the like.

We welcome your feedback and comments on this guide! If you do use it, please let us know what you, your students and faculty think.

New Topic Guides

Just before ALA Midwinter, we completed work on six new Topic Guides, bringing the total to 16!

Topic Guides are platform-agnostic handouts for interdisciplinary research. Each has three search scenarios, and a selected list of terms from our thesaurus.

As of this writing, Topic Guides are available for

  • Child Development
  • Education
  • Feminism
  • Forensics
  • Gerontology
  • Grief & Trauma Counseling
  • Integrative Medicine
  • Law & Criminal Justice
  • Management
  • Marketing & Advertising
  • Military Psychology
  • Neuroscience
  • Nursing
  • Nutrition & Dietetics
  • Religion & Spirituality
  • Sexuality & Gender Identity

The guides are available on the PsycINFO® Topic Guides page, where you'll find them in two formats

  • a PowerPoint file that contains only the text, so that you can incorporate any portions of the guide that you like into existing instruction materials
  • a full-color PDF that you can download and print at your institution

We are also glad to send you a quantity of professionally-printed guides, free of charge. Just send us a note.

Spring Conference Training Opportunities
