Partnering to approve new educational and psychological testing standards

The new standards will include updates on fairness, accountability, technology and workplace issues.

The latest version of the Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing was approved in 2013. APA, the American Educational Research Association (AERA) and the National Council on Measurement in Education have collaborated on development of the standards since 1966. The standards provide criteria for evaluating tests and testing practices. They apply to a wide range of standardized instruments and procedures that sample an individual’s behavior, such as tests, assessments, inventories and scales.

The new version includes updated material on topics such as educational accountability and technological advances in testing and a reworking of chapters concerning workplace testing and credentialing. With the issue of fairness fundamental to testing practice, the new edition expands and integrates material on fairness into a single “foundations” chapter.

AERA will publish the new edition in the spring of 2014.
