APA-Style Helper 5.1 Frequently Asked Questions
Using APA-Style Helper
How do I download the program?
APA-Style Helper has been discontinued and is no longer available for download.
How do I disable my virus protection and firewall?
The download instructions suggest disabling my firewall and virus protection, how do I do this?
A hardware firewall, such as a cable or DSL router is not likely to be a problem. You may want to check though for another firewall on your system, such as the one included in Microsoft's recent Service Pack 2. Many people have this firewall on their systems and are unaware of it. To see if you have this particular firewall please do the following:
Go to your Start menu.
Select Control Panel.
On this screen look for Windows Firewall.
If you double click on Windows Firewall the General tab should have a simple On/off selection.
For other software firewalls, you will need to follow the publisher's instructions on how to disable it temporarily.
If you are using a virus protection program such as Norton or MacAfee there should be a link to them through your Start menu under All programs. Click the link to open the "Control Center". This may be called other names such as "Security Center" or similar names.
Click the link to access your virus scanner configuration. In that area you should see a link to "disable" or "temporarily disable" virus scanning. Please click that link. If it is not a temporarily disabled, be sure to re-enable it when you are done.
You should then be able to proceed to complete the download and installation process.
If your virus scanner is not similar to the above, please consult the software's documentation on how to disable it temporarily.
If you have a bundled security program like Norton Securities you may need to disable the whole program to get the download to complete.
Why is the installer installing a different program?
When I install the program it looks like it is installing another program. What should I do?
This may occur if you have a "setup.exe" file in the same location you are running our installer from. To correct this, cancel the installation. Then please create a new folder on your desktop and download the installer to that location. Once the download is complete, run the installer from the newly created folder and the problem should not reoccur.
My installer appears to hang or does not complete successfully...
If you are using the download version of the program, and the installer will not complete, please follow the instructions above on disabling firewalls and virus scanners. If you have already followed these instructions and are still unable to complete the installation, try downloading and installing the .Net Framework separately, and then re-run the installer.
To download and install the .Net Framework, please do one of two things, either run windows update and download and install the .Net Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1, or you can go to:
(be sure to select the default english language version of the framework)
Download the .Net Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 and follow the installation instructions. Then run windows update to be sure you have all the latest Patches installed on your system. You can find Windows Update in your start menu under All Programs.
Once this process is completed, please try re-running the installer. It should now complete successfully.
"Not a valid Win32 application" error message...
A Windows error message stating that this is, "Not a valid Win32 application" is generated when the download process terminated prematurely and the entire file was not successfully downloaded. If repeated attempts are unsuccessful, the problem may be that you are using either Internet Explorer or your service provider is AOL.
If you are using Microsoft Internet explorer, it has probably cached the incomplete file. Go to TOOLS > INTERNET OPTIONS... > GENERAL and DELETE FILES. Next check the box to DELETE ALL OFF-LINE CONTENT.
If you are using AOL with a slow dial-up connection, the problem may be that AOL is terminating your connection during the download process which they consider to be a period of inactivity. To combat the AOL design defect, you should occasionally check your e-mail until the download is complete so that AOL doesn't treat your connection as inactive. Also you might try downloading in the middle of the night or some other time when internet traffic is relative quiet.
Will the program correct for capitalization in my references/title?
The APA-Style Helper will not correct for capitalization at the present time. The titles will appear exactly as you input them.
How do I edit my references?
To edit references within the APA-Style Helper 5.1 you will need to delete any corresponding citations first. Then in the Reference section select "References in this article". From there, highlight the reference you need to edit and use the tabs at the bottom to navigate to the sections you need changed. Once the changes have been made, please go back to your paper and add your citations again.
When I try to preview my references they do not show up on the preview page. How do I get these to appear?
In order to get your references in to your paper, you will need to cite them in your text first. If you need your reference list before writing your paper, please create a sample document and add your citations. As each citation is added, it will appear in the preview references page.
How do I print my reference page by itself?
To print the reference page alone you must first export your document. To export, go to the Style Helper File menu and select Export Article. The exported article will be saved automatically in an SH5 folder. You will be given the option to save it in a different location such as your documents folder. We recommend that you do this as it will make it easier for you to locate the document.
Once you have saved your exported article you will need to open it directly in Word. When it is open you can print the reference page by itself or as part of the entire document.
