APA remembers Sen. Ted Kennedy, 1932-2009APA mourns the death of Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.) , who died on August 25. As chairman of the Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions, Sen. Kennedy was a key leader in efforts to reform our nation’s health-care system. Sen. Kennedy was also a relentless advocate for mental health parity, working for more than a decade to pass legislation that eventually gave millions of Americans better access to mental health care. In appreciation of his extraordinary dedication, APA awarded Sen. Kennedy its prestigious Presidential Citation at its annual convention in 2008. In 1999, APA gave Sen. Kennedy its Outstanding Leadership Award for his efforts to improve mental health care.
