STATE ASSOCIATION LEADER TAPPED TO FILL APA GOVERNANCE AFFAIRS POSITION

Dr. Nancy Gordon Moore Joins APA Executive Staff

WASHINGTON—The American Psychological Association announced today that Nancy Gordon Moore, PhD, has been named APA's executive director for governance affairs. Dr. Moore is currently Executive Director of the Kentucky Psychological Association, a longtime member of APA, and has served on various APA governance groups.

In her new role, Dr. Moore will join the executive management team of the APA Central Office, and will work closely with the APA Board of Directors, Council of Representatives and APA presidents. In addition, along with her staff, Dr. Moore will manage all board and committee operations, APA elections, services to APA divisions, the annual convention and presidential and other special projects.

"I am extraordinarily excited to have Dr. Moore join our executive team in the Central Office. Governance Affairs houses one of the most important portfolios of activities for the Association, and it was critical that we have a multi-talented manager to follow our beloved Judy Strassburger, who is really a living legend at APA,” said APA CEO Dr. Norman Anderson. “What you hear most about Dr. Moore, and what I have observed directly, is that she brings a high degree of creativity and innovation to her work, coupled with strong collaborative, intellectual, problem solving, and interpersonal skills. All of these are essential to running Governance Affairs at APA."

Dr. Moore will transition from Kentucky to the APA Central Office this winter and spring, with an official start date of May 1, 2009. Prior to May, Dr. Moore will begin working closely with the Governance Affairs staff and others to facilitate her transition. “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to serve APA in this new capacity and look forward to working with the excellent staff in Governance Affairs, providing support to the many dedicated volunteers in governance and superior services for divisions and Convention attendees,” Dr. Moore said in accepting the position. “I am excited about the chance to contribute to the continuing evolution of the association as it faces the challenges of the 21st century.”

During Dr. Moore's eight-year tenure as executive director of the Kentucky Psychological Association (KPA), the organization doubled its membership and more than doubled its revenue. KPA won four national awards given to state associations by APA during Moore's tenure. She also led an innovative public education campaign entitled Heads Up Kentucky! Psychology Promotes Healthy Living.

Dr. Moore graduated from Ohio University in 1976 and earned her MA and PhD degrees in clinical psychology from the University of Louisville in 1980 and 1984, respectively. She is working toward an MBA from the University of Louisville College of Business, to be conferred in May.

A fellow of the APA, Dr. Moore has also served in numerous governance roles, including on the Committee for the Advancement of Professional Practice and the APA Division for State, Territorial and Provincial Psychological Association Affairs.

Dr. Moore succeeds Judy Strassburger, who retires in mid-February after nearly 40 years of service to the association.

The American Psychological Association (APA), in Washington, DC, is the largest scientific and professional organization representing psychology in the United States and is the world's largest association of psychologists. APA's membership includes more than 150,000 researchers, educators, clinicians, consultants and students. Through its divisions in 54 subfields of psychology and affiliations with 60 state, territorial and Canadian provincial associations, APA works to advance psychology as a science, as a profession and as a means of promoting human welfare.
