NSF Names New Head of Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences

University of Michigan history professor Myron Gutmann conducts research in historical demography.

The National Science Foundation has announced the selection of Myron Gutmann to be head of the Directorate for Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences (SBE). Gutmann, who conducts research in historical demography, is currently Professor of History and Director of the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research at the University of Michigan. He has held multiple grants from the National Institutes of Health for population research and has served as a member and chair of NIH study sections. In 2005-06, he was the president of the Consortium of Social Science Associations. Gutmann will begin his new NSF post in November.

Gutmann succeeds David Lightfoot as head of SBE. Lightfoot will return to Georgetown University, where he is Professor of Linguistics and previously served as Dean of the Graduate School.
