Connecticut College and Morgan State University psychology departments win APA Departmental Service Awards
The Board of Scientific Affairs of the American Psychological Association has selected the departments of psychology at Connecticut College and at Morgan State University as recipients of the 2013 Departmental Award for Culture of Service in the Psychological Science.
This award recognizes departments that consistently support service by faculty at all levels, encourage students to engage in service and demonstrate a commitment to service in the psychological sciences. The award includes $5,000 that can be used to support departmental activities.
The citations for each of the 2013 awards are shown below.
Department of Psychology, Connecticut College, New London, Conn.
“The Department of Psychology at Connecticut College exemplifies what a culture of service to the discipline should be through its support of faculty serving on national boards and committees, editing journals, mentoring students, participating on academic committees, becoming involved in the local community, and promoting the value of psychological science in the public eye. Service to the discipline is a departmental value that is recognized and rewarded. The Department of Psychology at Connecticut College instills a commitment to service among its students by providing faculty role models and treating a culture of service as a valued part of academic activity.”
The department will use the award to support collaborative research among faculty and students and to support student travel to conferences to present research findings.
Department of Psychology, Morgan State University, Baltimore
“The Department of Psychology at Morgan State University embodies what a culture of service to the discipline should be through its support of faculty taking leadership roles in professional organizations, editing journals, reviewing research proposals, mentoring students, participating on university committees, and promoting the value of psychological science in the public eye. The department's commitment to student research and career guidance is impressive. The Department of Psychology at Morgan State University is an outstanding model of scholarship, mentoring, teaching, and service to its students and surrounding community.”
The department will use the award to support student travel to conferences and to support activities related to the department's 65th anniversary celebration.
Nominations for the 2014 Culture of Service awards are being accepted now until April 1, 2014. For additional information, see the Distinguished Service Award and Departmental Award Web pages. Individual awardees receive an honorarium of $1,000. Departmental awardees receive $5,000 to be used to support departmental activities.
Winners are selected by the APA Board of Scientific Affairs. (BSA members who have close connections with individual or department nominees do not participate in the selection process.)
