Comments from Participants of the APA Advanced Statistical Training in Psychology
2006
"The ASTP was a great experience for me. The lab tutorials were very informative, and the opportunity to work with professors and students from a variety of locations and backgrounds enhanced the learning environment. And last but not least, we all had a lot of fun. Thanks again for letting me attend!"
Aaron Boulton, Augustana College
"The ASTP Program was one of the best things I have done in my academic career. I would recommend this program to any student that has plans pursuing a professional degree in Psychology. Not only did I learn some of the fundamental skills I will need in Grad school, it was also a great networking experience, the participants were from all over the U.S. If I had not participated in ASTP not only would I not feel as prepared for Grad school, I may have never had the opportunity to meet such wonderful new friends."
Crystal McWhirter, Coastal Carolina University
"Stats camp was fun and educative. I got to interact with students from different institutions in the field of psychology. The experience was unique because of the diversity of the participants and their areas of interest. Coming from a small university, I got to compare my university with that of others, and realized that my university is just as good. Before leaving for ASTP, I wondered how I was going to learn a bunch of statistical tests in just a week. It wasn’t a problem. The instructors Brett, Keith and Mauricio were wonderful. It wasn’t all about learning how to run tests using SPSS, the games we played in the evenings were fun. The best part was returning to school. I got to boast about the opportunity of being a participant. In addition, it was a contribution to my resume."
Sheri Nsamenang, New Mexico Highlands University
"The APA's Advanced Statistical Training Program was definitely an incredible experience. While it was challenging and intensive, the instructors really made the material accessible to students from all skill levels. During the week, I learned about stats, psychology, and grad school not only from the staff, but my colleagues as well. I also loved exploring Washington, DC with students from across the country who had joined to crunch some serious numbers! I would highly recommend this program to anyone who is considering pursuing psychology or statistics in any capacity. The program was undoubtedly one of the best psychology experiences I've had during my undergraduate years."
Goal Auzeen Saedi, Portland State University
"It was definitely refreshing spending time with people who enjoy learning and talking about psychology as much as I do. I can't say enough about the ASTP program itself. The knowledge that I gained was something that I could have only dreamed about learning as an undergraduate. I feel much more comfortable working with SPSS, and can actually comprehend the statistical jargon that you find in most published psychological studies. Although there was quite a bit of information thrown at me in such a short span of time, I can honestly say it was well worth the headache, and I have retained a lot more than I orginially thought I had. I feel much more confident in my ability to succeed at a graduate level and the thought of going to graduate school for psychology is much more appealing than it ever was.
P.S. They gave us free t-shirts. What more could you ask for? Sign up for STATS camp. You won't regret it."
