Geographic Information Systems for Behavioral Research
University of California, Santa Barbara
July 16-18, 2008
The objective of this ATI is to introduce the science and technologies of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to psychologists and other behavioral scientists. GIS provides researchers with important tools for measuring the behavior of individuals and groups in relation to spatial and geographic contexts. It makes possible new approaches for investigating spatial cognition and for developing perceptual and navigational technologies for persons with and without disabilities. GIS also opens new directions in the study of environmental influences on economic and criminal behavior, in epidemiology and public health, and in community planning. Further, GIS is an increasingly important instructional tool at all levels of education and training.
There will be three days of mixed activities consisting of morning presentations by leading GIS experts, including users from Psychology and Geography, afternoon sessions designed to familiarize participants with selected GIS software and techniques of Spatial Analysis, and a focus on GIS usage in cognitive science, health sciences, counseling, criminology, and education.
The ATI will be designed to give “hands on” experience with selected GIS procedures. Participants should bring their own laptops onto which GIS software (ESRI free-ware) will be loaded for practical use in the afternoon lab sessions. Each afternoon will focus on a different technical aspect of GIS. Participants are encouraged to bring some examples of the digitized data they hope to analyze using GIS. Sample data will be provided to all participants for use during the labs. Participants will also receive an extensive set of reference materials related to GIS.
ATI personnel will include: Reginald G. Golledge (behavioral geographer, UCSB), Michael C. Goodchild (geographer and GIS expert, UCSB), Daniel R. Montello (geographer, psychologist, and cognitive scientist, UCSB), Stephen Hirtle (psychologist and information scientist, University of Pittsburgh), Gerard Rushton (geographer and health scientist, University of Iowa), and C. Donald Heth (psychologist, University of Alberta). Other experts from the ESRI Education Group may also serve as special guest instructors. Two graduate technical assistants from the UCSB spatial research program will be on hand throughout the course to assist participants.

Financial Aid
The APA Science Directorate will have some scholarship travel funds available for the participants most in need. The amount and number of scholarships will be determined after all of the applications have been received and we have an idea of the need. If you expect to request financial aid, please do so by Wednesday, April 30. Typically, we will support graduate students and postdocs first, while psychologists at other career levels will be considered based on need, if funding remains. We encourage you to speak to your research mentor or department head about the availability of institutional funds for this sort of advanced training opportunity. If you would like to apply for APA assistance to in order to attend this ATI, the first step is to apply for the program before the deadline. Then, by April 30th, send an email to
the Science Directorate describing the amount of funding required, reasons for this need, and outside sources of funding. You will be notified of funding decisions after participants have been selected for the ATI and prior to its registration deadline.
Cancellation Policy
If you cancel up to 30 days prior to the start date, and we are able to fill your place, a full refund will be provided. If you cancel less than 30 days prior, and we are able to fill your place, we will give a refund of 75%. If you cancel at any time and we are unable to fill your place, then no refund can be provided.
