Nonlinear Methods for Psychological Science

University of Cincinnati
June 9-13, 2008

This Advanced Training Institute teaches methods of nonlinear analysis, and provides each participant with the first-hand experience of having analyzed time series for nonlinear structure. Each participant generates a unique dataset that they learn to analyze during the course tutorials, and leaves the training with turnkey software for nonlinear analyses.

The institute is directed by Guy Van Orden (University of Cincinnati), in collaboration with fellow psychologists Kevin Shockley (UC), Michael Riley (UC), Rick Dale (University of Memphis), and Jay Holden (California State University Northridge). Other experts in nonlinear methods may also make presentations. The course is specifically tailored to psychologists and graduate students, and the only prerequisites are the standard statistics courses taught in almost all psychology graduate programs.

Some of the methods covered are not represented elsewhere in textbooks. Despite their utility, they are mostly known and disseminated through journal publications in disciplines other than psychology. The course makes use of a free webBook Tutorials in Contemporary Nonlinear Methods for the Behavioral Sciences, edited by Riley and Van Orden, which came out of an NSF workshop on Nonlinear Methods in Psychology.

The ATI focuses on analyses that have already impacted psychological science in prominently published work, such as quantitative recurrence analysis and cross-recurrence analysis (forms of nonlinear "correlation" analysis), fractal methods, and the discovery of power law structure. Theoretical issues may also be introduced in the course. Nonlinear methods using limited and multiple time series data are emphasized. Optional course readings may include basic articles on theoretical issues in nonlinear dynamics and tutorials in nonlinear analysis, and will largely come from the webBook.

Financial Aid
The APA Science Directorate will have some scholarship travel funds available for the participants most in need. The amount and number of scholarships will be determined after all of the applications have been received and we have an idea of the need. If you expect to request financial aid, please do so by Wednesday, April 30. Typically, we will support graduate students and postdocs first, while psychologists at other career levels will be considered based on need, if funding remains. We encourage you to speak to your research mentor or department head about the availability of institutional funds for this sort of advanced training opportunity. If you would like to apply for APA assistance to in order to attend this ATI, the first step is to apply for the program before the deadline. Then, by April 30th, send an email to the Science Directorate describing the amount of funding required, reasons for this need, and outside sources of funding. You will be notified of funding decisions after participants have been selected for the ATI and prior to its registration deadline.

Cancellation Policy
If you cancel up to 30 days prior to the start date, and we are able to fill your place, a full refund will be provided. If you cancel less than 30 days prior, and we are able to fill your place, we will give a refund of 75%. If you cancel at any time and we are unable to fill your place, then no refund can be provided.

If you have any questions, please feel free to call 202.336.6000, or send an email to Advanced Training Institute
