Advanced Training Institutes

Affordable training is available in GIS – a cutting edge research method and technology!

The APA Science Directorate encourages you to take part in the intensive hands-on training course for psychological scientists on Geographic Information Systems for Psychological Research. APA Advanced Training Institutes (ATIs) expose advanced graduate students, new and established faculty, post-docs, and other researchers to state of the art psychological research methods and emerging technologies. More information about these programs can be found at www.apa.org/science/ati.html.

Geographic Information Systems for Psychological Research
A new ATI on Geographic Information Systems for Psychological Research will be held the day before the APA Convention in San Francisco, California. This one-day program will take place Thursday, August 16, 2007, from 9:30 am – 4:30 pm, and will be a thorough introduction to the exciting possibilities of GIS-enhanced psychological research.

This ATI will focus on the uses (and potential uses) of GIS in psychological research, with plenty of examples. A panel of psychologists who conduct research using GIS will speak about the contributions of this methodology to their investigations. Instructors will include Drs. Reginald Golledge, Michael Goodchild, Daniel Montello, and Stephen Hirtle. The development of current technology and computer programs will also be discussed, and participants are encouraged to bring along their own laptops in order to receive some course-related “freeware.” When possible, demonstrations of GIS technology will be matched to the research interests of attendees as described on the registration forms.

Tuition for all ATIs is substantially lower than marketplace prices because of a subsidy from APA's Science Directorate. Applications must be submitted electronically through the program's website. For more information about this exciting program, please visit www.apa.org/science/ati_gis.html or contact APA's Science Directorate via email or phone: (202) 336-6000.
