Using Large-Scale Databases: NICHD Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development
University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill
August 4-8, 2008
Learn to use longitudinal data from NICHD's Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development (SECCYD) in this APA Advanced Training Institute (ATI). The SECCYD data are from 1,364 families, followed since their infants' birth in 1991. The study covers demographic, family, maternal, paternal and caregiver characteristics; child social and emotional outcomes; language development; cognitive skills; school readiness; growth and health measures, and much more. It includes data collected by observation, testing, and face-to-face and phone interviews. This ATI is designed to introduce the SECCYD study and its available databases so that researchers may independently use and train others to use the databases for original scholarship and publication.
NOTE: This is the final year that this ATI will be offered in its current form.
The ATI will take place at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in affiliation with the Research Triangle Institute. Instructors will be SECCYD investigators and data managers. Topics include the conceptual framework of the study, its methodological design, description and psychometric properties of a large subset of variables included in the analytical data sets, and introduction to the raw data sets. Workshops include lecture, discussion, and hands-on computer sessions.
Through a grant from NICHD, training institute costs for transportation, lodging, food, and materials will be covered for the 20 faculty members, post-docs, and advanced graduate students chosen to take part in this ATI. Upon acceptance, participants will pay a registration fee. Participants will be contacted in the early spring to arrange travel and accommodations at the historic Carolina Inn.
To apply to attend this ATI, candidates must fill out APA's ATI application, as well as an application to RTI for access to the data base. Part of the RTI application requires obtaining institutional review board (IRB) approval to use the database.
