Performing Web-Based Research
University of Northern Iowa
Cedar Falls , IA
July 9-13, 2007
This ATI, led by John Eustis Williams, PhD, and other Workshop Instructors including Drs. Anja Göritz, Ulf Reips, and William Schmidt, will prepare participants to conduct web-based research. After this ATI, participants will also be able to participate actively in the many online data sharing resources that currently exist and are being developed.
Topics will include ethics of online research, web-based data collection, making the most of shared databases, the use of html for survey, and experimental designs through Authorware. Participants can expect to learn the basics of setting up a website, posting surveys and multimedia experiments, using randomized assignment and design, collecting data, securing data in an online environment, and the use of scripts to check for data integrity, multiple submissions, and data analysis.
Participants needn't have any prior knowledge of web-based research, but should come prepared with a small web project that tey would like to complete during the week. At the end of the ATI, all participants will have completed or be well into the development on an online research project.
Up to 24 participants will be chosen to attend this ATI. Participants will receive a group discount on rooms at the Blackhawk Hotel, centrally located in historic Cedar Falls. Complimentary breakfasts and shuttle service to the university training site will be provided.

The Science Directorate will have some scholarship travel funds available for the participants most in need. The amount and number of scholarships will be determined after all of the applications have been received and we have an idea of the need. If you expect to request financial aid, please do so by Friday, April 6. Typically, we will support graduate students and postdocs first, while psychologists at other career levels will be considered based on need, if funding remains. We encourage you to speak to your research mentor or department head about the availability of institutional funds for this sort of advanced training opportunity. If you would like to apply for APA assistance to in order to attend this ATI, the first step is to apply for the program before the deadline. Then, by April 6th, send an email to the Science Directorate describing the amount of funding required, reasons for this need, and outside sources of funding. You will be notified of funding decisions after participants have been selected for the ATI and prior to its registration deadline.
