APA Science Awards

Distinguished Scientific Contribution Awards and Award for Early Career Contributions
Annual award program honoring psychologists who have made distinguished theoretical or empirical contributions to basic research in psychology, and also those whose contributions lead to the understanding or amelioration of important practical problems, and recognition of young psychologists.
Nomination Deadline: June 1, 2009

Distinguished Service to Psychological Science Award
This Award recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to psychological science through their commitment to a culture of service.
Nomination Deadline: April 1, 2009

Departmental Award for Culture of Service in the Psychological Sciences
This Award recognizes departments that demonstrate a commitment to service in the psychological sciences.
Nomination Deadline: April 1, 2009

Meritorious Research Service Commendation
This commendation recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to psychological science through their service as employees of the federal government or other organizations.
Nomination Deadline: March 9, 2009

F. J. McGuigan Early-Career Investigator Prize
Biennial award program which recognizes the efforts of a young, PhD level, psychological science investigator in the areas of research consistent with those pursued by Frank Joseph McGuigan.
Application Deadline: March 1, 2010

APA Student Travel Awards
Annual award program for graduate students who have been accepted to present their research findings at the APA Convention. Information about the competitive application process becomes available online each fall.
Application Deadline: April 1, 2009

Dissertation Research Awards
Annual award program to assist doctoral students with the costs of dissertation research. Information about the competitive application process becomes available online each spring.
Application deadline: September 15, 2009

APA Early Graduate Student Researcher Awards
Annual competition sponsored by the APA Science Student Council for early (i.e., pre-doctoral) research. The purpose of the program is to reward an outstanding student research project completed before the dissertation. Each year three $1,000 awards will be granted.

American Psychological Foundation (APF) / Council of Graduate Departments of Psychology (COGDOP) Graduate Research Scholarships in Psychology
Several graduate scholarships for $1,000 each, one $2,000 scholarship—the Clarence J. Rosecrans Scholarship, one $3,000 scholarship—the Ruth G. and Joseph D. Matarazzo Scholarship, and one $5,000 scholarship—the Harry and Miriam Levinson Scholarship, are awarded annually.
Application deadline: June 15, 2009

Master Lecturers Program
The Master Lecture Program, an annual Science Directorate program developed by the Board of Scientific Affairs, supports up to five psychological scientists to speak at the APA Annual Convention.
Nominations are solicited in the spring of each year.

Distinguished Scientist Lecturer Program
The Distinguished Scientist Lecturer Program, an annual Science Directorate program developed in 1990 by the Board of Scientific Affairs, supports up to three psychological scientists to speak at Regional Psychological Association meetings.
Nominations are solicited in the spring of each year.

APA Division Dissertation Awards

Dissertation Award in Developmental Psychology (div 7)
The Outstanding Dissertation Award is given to an individual whose dissertation is judged to be an outstanding contribution to developmental psychology. Criteria also include: important question, strong theoretical rationale, systematic methods, publishable in a top journal, well-written summary, contribution to developmental science and theory, and a strong letter of support from the dissertation advisor.

RHR International Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Award (div 13)
This award, given to a doctoral student or recent graduate for exemplary research contributing to theory or practice of consulting psychology, is funded by RHR International. The winner receives a $1,000 check and travel funds to present the award winning research at the APA annual meeting.

School Psychology Outstanding Dissertation Award (div 16)
This award is presented to a school psychologist who has completed a doctoral dissertation which merits special recognition and which has the potential to contribute to the science and practice of school psychology.

The George E. Briggs Dissertation Award (div 21)

The Society for Consumer Psychology SCP-SHETH Dissertation Proposal Competition (div 23)
The winner of this competition will receive $1,000 and will be asked to present their research at the winter SCP conference. Two runners up will also be selected, will each be awarded $500, and will be asked to present their research at the SCP conference.

Psychopharmacology and Substance Abuse Outstanding Dissertation Award (div 28)
Honors the best doctoral dissertation in psychopharmacology and substance abuse of the past year. $250, engraved plaque, and travel support for the recipient to attend and present an address.

Exercise and Sports Psychology Dissertation Award (div 47)
Division 47 of the American Psychological Association invites the submission of applications for the Dissertation Award. This award recognizes outstanding student research that has the greatest potential for making a significant contribution to the theoretical and applied knowledge base in exercise and sport psychology.

Group Psychology and Psychotherapy Dissertation Award (div 49)
This award honors a recent dissertation by someone whose research on small groups seems especially promising.
