Scientific Awards and Honors

Early Research Award Selection Criteria

The following criteria apply to the Basic, Applied, and Interdisciplinary Science awards:

  • The applicant clearly expressed understanding of the field of inquiry and posed meaningful research questions.
  • The research design was rigorous and the obtained results were valid, providing meaningful answers to questions posed by the researchers.
  • The study made significant theoretical contributions to the respective field of psychology, and/or
  • The study made significant application contributions to the respective field of psychology and to society.
  • The applicant demonstrated his/her intellectual merit, important in aspects such as conceptualization and design.
  • The applicant demonstrated independence and originality in his/her study.
  • The research should have been recently completed research, within approximately twelve months preceding the submission deadline of August 22, 2008.

All criteria will be considered within the context of the individual's overall career goals as evidenced by prior research involvement in psychological science.

Applicants must be graduate students of psychology in good standing with their university, at a regionally accredited university or college located in the United States or Canada.

Applicants must be student affiliates or associate members of the American Psychological Association. Students who are not affiliates must apply for affiliation when submitting materials for the Early Researcher Award. The APA Student Affiliate membership form is available on-line at: www.apa.org/membership/forstudents.html.

Preference will be given to students who demonstrate outstanding research abilities earlier in their graduate training (i.e., up to and including master's thesis or equivalent), and to applicants showing a greater level of independence in conducting their research.
