Summer Science Institute

Comments from Participants of the APA Summer Science Institute

2006

"I would have never imagined how amazing SSI was when I originally applied. There is something to be gained by everyone, and I even learned about fields in Psychology that I was not aware existed. It was very intellectually exciting to be surrounded by peers and faculty who had very similar interests and ambitions than the ones I have. SSI is a very well structured program and I would highly recommend it to any undergraduate who is interested in pursuing-or even considering—a career in Psychology."

Maribel Diaz, Stanford University

"At the risk of sounding like an overly dramatic junior high student hopped up on sugar, let me just say that attending SSI was one of the best experiences of my academic life to date. I plan to strongly encourage other students to apply. (Apply!) It was a great ten days, and I practically guarantee you will enjoy the experience. Meeting people who are just as interested in psychology as I am and hearing about the wide variety of research opportunities in psychology was wonderful. (Apply now! If not for the academic opportunities, do it for the recreational excursions or the freebies. Just apply. What do you really have to lose?) Additionally, the location was fabulous; the cities were beautiful, but more importantly, I found myself utterly starstruck by all the B.F. Skinner-related items just lying around UMN. If you want to apply but are worried about finances, fear not, because APA made applying for a generous financial aid package simple and painless. (What are you waiting for? Go apply already!)"

Amanda Harsin, South Dakota State University

"APA SSI is an invaluable learning opportunity for anyone who is interested in psychology. It allows you to explore different research areas through lectures, hands-on lab experiments, and informal panels. From SSI, I learned a lot about what interests me and it has given me a better sense of what I would like to pursue as a career. I was also able to explore the beautiful Twin Cities with a bunch of new friends which was all in all an incredible experience. Thanks again to APA and the University of Minnesota for being such great hosts and for providing us with such a stellar memorable time!"

"It was a great experience. It allowed for a great understanding of the different fields of psychology, and helped me to get involved with research. It was both fun and motivating to be apart of the program. Thanks!"

Gus Diggs, Christopher Newport University

"I would just like to thank you for the opportunity to experience APA SSI this summer. It was an amazing program and it has made me even more excited to pursue a career in psychology. Everything about the program went above and beyond my expectations. The people were amazing, the lectures were all interesting, and my lab experience was the best. When I go back to University of Richmond in the fall I am going to encourage fellow students to consider applying--this really is an experience of a lifetime. Thanks again and if you have any questions about University of Richmond as your son goes through the college application process feel free to email me at any time!"

Erin Jones, University of Richmond

"What I would like to say to everyone thinking about applying the Summer Science Institute is to do it! SSI was and always will be one of the greatest experiences of my life. You not only learn a great amount of academic information but you also spend ten days with some of the coolest people from around the nation."

Patrick Doyle, Rhode Island College

"The APA's Summer Science Institute at Vanderbilt University was an amazing experience that will remain with me throughout the rest of my endeavors in the field of psychology. The opportunity to work with nationally-renown researchers was an honor. Likewise, meeting over thirty students that were so passionate about and active in psychology and research was also a great privilege. It is a program that I highly recommend, as it blends both hands-on academic experiences and social excursions to make for an unforgettable institute!"

Goali Saedi, Portland State University

"I absolutely loved SSI. Not only was it an amazing opportunity, it really began to direct me in the path that I want to take for my life. It has taught me about so many of the doors that are open to me in life, and it has truly made me EXCITED about getting to choose my path.

"In addition to the amazing things that I was able to learn and experience, it has also provided me with the most intense instant friendships that I have ever had! I've never experienced such instant camaraderie, and I only wish that another opportunity such as this that could bring us all together again. I've met tons of amazing people from all walks of life, and I feel like I walked away from SSI better off in the world for having met these wonderful people."

Kat Slager, Warren-Wilson College

"I had a really great time at Vanderbilt. I think APA has a really great program -- I feel like I learned a lot not just about Psychology but also about all the exciting things I can choose to do in the future. It was awesome to get to know such a great group of students like me who are interested in Psychology, and talking to them and people like Kerstin and Eban has made me all the more excited to return to school in the fall and continue learning!"

Elizabeth Johnson, Carleton College

"As SSI participants, we hands had the opportunity to work with professionals that are prominent in their fields and eager to aid us in achieving our career goals. The hands-on experience was both very beneficial and informative."

Shanté A. Bassett, Loyola College in Maryland

"I see that the website is already up, but I just want to say I really enjoyed and befitted from my SSI experience. I wish more psychology students could have share that experience."

Leroy Scott, Livingstone College

"The best part about the SSI is interacting with and getting to know some of the most interesting, talented people your age. You will get to know people with similar interests and passions. Even though you are only together for a short period of time, you will see yourself becoming lifelong friends."

Alissa Catiis, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

APA SSI was a wonderful experience that has exposed me to so many areas of scientific psychology. Through the various seminars we sat through, I found what specific areas I am interested in and those that I am definitely not. One week helped me narrow my path for the future as I look forward to applying to graduate schools. Aside from the intense learning, I made some wonderful life long friends.

Thanks again for giving me such a great experience last summer. I can't say enough how worthwhile i thought the program was. I'm looking in to a NSF REU program for the summer if it works out around my sister's wedding.
