Women in Science and Technology

The activities of the Women in Science and Technology initiative (WIST) are coordinated across the Education, Science, and Public Interest Directorates. Co-chairs: Connie Chan, PhD; Mary Beth Kenkel, PhD; Nancy Russo, PhD; Cheryl Travis, PhD; and Melba Vasquez, PhD. WIST was initially developed as a 2000 APA Presidential Initiative under Pat DeLeon, PhD.

For over 4000 years, women around the world have challenged their place in society and have contributed to the advancement of science and technology (see Time-Line of Women in Science and Technology). Our goal is to stimulate reflection on the barriers they overcame and celebrate their courage, dedication, persistence, and wisdom. Their legacy of excellence is a source of inspiration and strength as we consider the more subtle but nonetheless formidable barriers that continue to face women who pursue scientific careers.

We also honor three contemporary women who have dedicated themselves to the cause of women in science -- Janet Welsh Brown, Cora Bagley Marrett, and Bernice R. Sandler -- who have each been awarded an APA Presidential citation for their leadership and advocacy on behalf of women in science and technology. These women are institution builders and leaders. Through their efforts, we have laws mandating equity in education, and scientific agencies and organizations now have enhancing the status of women scientists on their agendas. We would like to thank APA President Pat DeLeon for his vision and commitment to these issues and for making this project possible.
