Legal Risk Management Program

APA's Legal Risk Management Program is part of an ongoing comprehensive effort by the Office of General Counsel to minimize legal risk to the American Psychological Association, its governance volunteers, Divisions and staff by increasing awareness and understanding of legal and regulatory issues that affect APA’s operations. As a large national scientific, educational and professional nonprofit organization, APA and its Divisions are affected by a host of laws and regulations at the federal, state and local levels. Contracts, email ists, publishing and advocacy are among the daily activities that have important legal dimensions. Antitrust, federal and state tax, intellectual property and business law are a few of the areas of law that are taken into account by OGC lawyers when counseling our clients.

The best way to avoid running afoul of the law is to stay informed about potential pitfalls and to seek guidance early from OGC. OGC lawyers and staff are ready to assist in solving legal problems and can be contacted via email or telephone as noted. Governance volunteers and APA staff will soon have access to password protected online educative resources regarding legal and regulatory provisions they should be familiar with, as well as practical strategies to minimize risks.
