Notes from the Executive Office

Transdisciplinary professionalism

Executive Director Cynthia D. Belar, PhD, co-chaired the Institute of Medicine’s Global Forum on Innovation in Health Professional Education on May 14-15, 2013. Her co-chair was Matt Wynia, MD, from the AMA Council of Academic Societies. The workshop topic, “Establishing Transdisciplinary Professionalism for Improving Health,” addressed the impact that a cross-disciplinary code of ethics could have on different stakeholders (students, patients, community, hospital staff and administration) in terms of improving trust among them, as well as improving quality and efficiency in care. Also addressed was the definition of what professionalism means and the impact this has on collaboration among health professions. Opportunities for teaching and promoting professionalism were also discussed.
