In international developments, Psi Chi is pleased to announce the approval of its 18th international chapter, our first in Ecuador, at Universidad San Francisco de Quito. The new chapter will be official after induction of its first members. The chapter’s faculty advisor, Dra Ana Trueba, completed her PhD in clinical psychology at Southern Methodist University in Texas.
Psi Chi was well represented at the International Congress of Psychology (ICP) held in Yokohama, Japan, on July 24-29, 2016. Psi Chi’s faculty advisor at HELP University in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Cameron Teoh, PhD, presented a poster and a talk on Psi Chi with Executive Director Martha S. Zlokovich, PhD. In addition, Teoh brought 15 Psi Chi students with her, all of whom also presented research.
Other advisors spotted at ICP were Midwestern Psychological Association Board Vice President Melissa Buelow, PhD, who teaches at The Ohio State University, Newark, Ohio; University of Puerto Rico Rio Piedras advisor Guillermo Bernal, PhD; People’s Friendship University of Russia advisor Elena Chebotareva, PhD; and University of Southern Mississippi advisor Elena Stepanova, PhD.
Psi Chi recently awarded undergraduate scholarships to four deserving students. This academic year is the second for which Psi Chi has awarded scholarships. Watch for graduate student scholarship opportunities beginning next year. All applications for FY17-18 will open spring 2017.
About the author
Martha S. Zlokovich, PhD, joined Psi Chi in 2008 as its second executive director, leaving Southeast Missouri State University after teaching there for 17 years. This move, however, was not her first involvement with Psi Chi. She served as chapter advisor from 1993-2008, Midwestern region vice president (1998-2000) and Psi Chi national president (2003-2004). At Southeast Missouri State University, Zlokovich taught child development, adolescent development, lifespan development, advanced child psychology and introductory psychology for majors. She also served as department chair. Her research focuses on student study habits, study beliefs and persistence to graduation as well as adolescent and young adult contraception and sexuality. She earned her MS and PhD in developmental psychology from the University of Florida and BA in psychology from UCLA.
