Attend "APAGS on the Road" in Atlanta

APAGS will offer a half-day graduate student workshop "APAGS on the Road: What they Didn't Teach Me in Grad School" on Jan. 17 at Emory University in Atlanta. Presenters will discuss alternative careers in psychology, passing the EPPP, navigating licensure, financial planning, student loan forgiveness and negotiating a job offer. Registration is free for APAGS members and $10 for non-members who register online by Jan. 12. Onsite registration is $20 (cash only) for members and non-members. A continental breakfast is included.

Explore psychoanalysis as a Div. 39 scholar

APA's Div. 39 (Psychoanalysis) welcomes applications from graduate students and early career psychologists for its Scholars Program, which introduces students and new clinicians to the division. Selected scholars receive a $500 travel grant to attend the division's spring conference "Life in Psychoanalysis in Life," to be held April 23-26 in San Francisco. Scholars receive the division's newsletter, journal and other publications at no cost and are matched with a mentor to meet with once per month and at the spring conference. Be a health equity ambassador

Graduate students are encouraged to apply to be health equity ambassadors through APA's Health Disparities Strategic Initiative, which aims to increase support for research, training and public interventions that improve health and reduce health disparities among vulnerable populations. Ambassadors receive free training via webinars on health equity topics and are eligible for mini-grants of up to $500 for smoking cessation activities. Apply for general psychology prize

Graduate students in all areas of psychology are encouraged to apply for the $300 Anne Anastasi General Psychology Graduate Student Awards sponsored by APA's Div. 1 (Society for General Psychology). The division selects one student in the first two years of graduate school and one student who has completed at least two years of graduate work. Self-nominations are welcome. Nominations and supporting materials are due Feb. 15.

Plan ahead: Spend a year working on Capitol Hill

Early career psychologists are encouraged to apply for the APA Congressional Fellowship and Executive Branch Science Fellowship programs. Congressional Fellows learn about federal policymaking by working as special legislative aides in congressional member or committee offices. Executive Branch Science Fellows gain crucial experience in science policy and research funding working in a federal science agency. Both programs offer a yearlong stipend and funds to support relocation, travel and the purchase of health insurance. Applications for this year's fellowships are due Jan. 9.

Network at the National Multicultural Conference and Summit

Graduate students attending the National Multicultural Conference and Summit, Jan. 15-16 in Atlanta, are invited to an APAGS Student Social on Thursday, Jan. 15 at Max Lager's Wood-Fired Grill and Brewery, 6:30-8:30 p.m. APAGS will provide free food and beverages. Work as an intern at APA headquarters

APA encourages graduate students to apply for its internship program, which offers paid and unpaid positions at APA's headquarters in Washington, D.C. For unpaid internships, students must arrange academic credit. Positions are open in six areas:

APA's 2015 Annual Convention is in Toronto, Aug. 6-9

Apply for $500 for travel to APA's Annual Convention.

Students can apply for the American Psychological Association of Graduate Students (APAGS) Convention Travel Awards to attend APA's Annual Convention in Toronto, Aug. 6–9. Five winners receive $500 to attend the meeting. Preference will be given to those who are first-time convention attendees, have academic or leadership experience, and who agree to be an APAGS ambassador at the convention. Applications are due April 1.

Funding opportunities

Up to $50,000 for research on giftedness

Graduate students and early career psychologists who are conducting research on gifted and talented children and adolescents can apply for funding through the American Psychological Foundation's Esther Katz Rosen Fund, which offers grants of up to $50,000. Apply by March 1.

Up to $43,680 for services to racial and ethnic-minority communities

Graduate students can apply to the APA Minority Fellowship Program, which offers a postdoctoral Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services Fellowship of up to $43,680 for a trainee providing services and/or developing policy for racially and ethnically diverse communities, a pre-doctoral Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services Fellowship of up to $22,476 for a student providing services for racially and ethnically diverse communities, and a Services for Transition Age Youth Fellowship of up to $6,000 for individuals in a terminal master's program who provide services for racial and ethnic minority youth ages 16-25 and their families. Apply by Jan. 15.

$15,000 for research on lesbian, gay or bisexual issues

Students who are conducting research that has the potential to increase the public's understanding of homosexuality can apply for the American Psychological Foundation's $15,000 Wayne F. Placek Grant. The grant supports empirical studies on any topic that addresses lesbian, gay or bisexual concerns, including prejudice, family or workplace issues, and subgroups of the lesbian and gay population that have been underrepresented in research. Apply by March 1.

$6,000 for couple or family dynamics research

Graduate students who are conducting research that advances theory, assessment or clinical practice in couple, family or multigenerational dynamics can apply for the $6,000 Randy Gerson Memorial Grant from the American Psychological Foundation. APF gives priority to projects that expand Gerson's work. Apply by Feb. 1.

$5,000 for research on psychotherapy

Graduate students, pre-doctoral interns, postdocs and early career psychologists who are conducting research on psychotherapy process or outcome can apply for the Charles J. Gelso, PhD, Psychotherapy Research Grants offered by APA's Div. 29 (Society for the Advancement of Psychotherapy). The division offers three $5,000 grants. The deadline is April 1. $1,500 for population research or travel

Students or early career researchers who are conducting research on human reproductive behavior or doing population studies can apply for $1,500 Henry P. David Research Grants from the American Psychological Foundation to support their research, or $1,500 Henry P. David Travel Grants to support research-related travel or attendance at an international meeting. Apply by Feb. 15.

$500 for feminist research

Graduate students who are conducting feminist research can apply for the Janet Hyde Graduate Student Research Grants offered through APA's Div. 35 (Society for the Psychology of Women). The deadline is March 15. Send applications to Clare M. Mehta, PhD, and Olivia Moorehead-Slaughter, PhD.

Be a reviewer for Translational Issues in Psychological Science

Graduate students can apply to be a reviewer for the graduate student journal Translational Issues in Psychological Science . To apply, upload a two-page curriculum vitae. The vitae should list a candidate's affiliation, years of training, manuscripts that have been submitted to a peer-reviewed outlet, and experience as a reviewer for peer-reviewed journals or conference submissions.

Attend the Summer Institute in Social and Personality Psychology

Social and personality psychology graduate students are encouraged to attend the two-week Summer Institute in Social and Personality Psychology, to be held in Boston, July 19-Aug. 1. Up to 80 pre-doctoral students in social and personality psychology are eligible for the institute, which is sponsored by APA's Div. 8 (Society for Personality and Social Psychology) with funding from the National Science Foundation. Top researchers and teachers in the field will offer five courses: "Emotion/Affect," "Intergroup Relations and Disparities," "Morality," "Personality Development" and "Evolutionary Processes." Instructors will also offer workshops on data analytic techniques and research methodologies. Registration is $200 and covers tuition, housing and accommodations. Limited scholarships are also available for registration and travel.

Join the APAGS leadership team

APAGS encourages graduate students to apply for elected and appointed positions on the APAGS committee for terms that will begin next August. The open elected positions are chair-elect; member at large, communications; and member at large, education. The three open appointed positions are advocacy coordinating team chair, convention committee chair and science committee chair. The deadline for elected positions is Jan. 12. The deadline for appointed positions is March 9. Applicants must be current APAGS members actively enrolled as graduate psychology students in good standing.
