Practice
The practice of psychology takes place in a wide range of contexts including individual practice, in large interdisciplinary health care settings, university counseling centers, community mental health centers, state psychiatric hospitals, prisons, the military services, public health services, community health and rural health clinics, and schools, among others.
Even after fulfilling academic and licensure requirements, psychologists continue to seek opportunities for continued education in established interest areas or emerging areas. The unique mental health needs of sexual orientation and gender diverse people is such an emerging area.
The findings of researchers and experiences of clinical practitioners inform practice guidelines for psychologists and the public, and professional associations create opportunities for psychologists to interact with peers and share knowledge.
Guidelines and Practice Position Statements
IPsyNet member guidelines and practice position statements from various psychology organizations around the world inform the practice of psychologists and provide scientific and culturally-pertinent information for education and training regarding sexual orientation and gender diverse people and issues.
Specialized Divisions, Groups and Sections
IPsyNet divisions, groups and sections are specialized interest groups organized by members of psychological organizations. Members of psychological associations and societies, and sometimes even nonmembers, can apply to join one or more divisions, each of which has their own eligibility criteria and dues. In addition, each division has its own officers, and may have websites, produce publications, maintain email list, present awards, and have convention activities and membership meetings.
