Hooker’s legacy continues

One of Evelyn Hooker’s research subjects never forgot her: Wayne Placek. He left his entire estate to Hooker, with instructions that the money be used “to encourage scientific research which will increase the general public’s understanding of homosexuality and alleviate the stress that gay men and lesbians experience in this and future civilizations.” Hooker decided to give the $550,000 bequest to the American Psychological Foundation. With that donation, the foundation has awarded more than $1 million in grants to talented researchers studying the effects of sexual orientation at work, in politics, in families, in relationships, on stress and health, in the media and in economic life, just to name a few.
