Attend the 2013 National Multicultural Conference and Summit
Registration is open for the 2013 National Multicultural Conference and Summit, Jan. 17–18, in Houston, sponsored by Divisions 17 (Society of Counseling Psychology), 35 (Society for the Psychology of Women), 44 (Society for the Psychological Study of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Issues) and 45 (Society for the Psychological Study of Ethnic Minority Issues). The featured keynote speaker will be Joycelyn Elders, MD, former U.S. Surgeon General. Other speakers will discuss health disparities, immigration, violence and multicultural competency benchmarks, among other topics.
The American Psychological Association of Graduate Students will sponsor opportunities for students to present research, network and seek mentoring. The organizing divisions will also honor nine trailblazers in multicultural psychology. Register at Multicultural Conference and Summit.
Apply for Division 2 grants
Division 2 (Society for the Teaching of Psychology) is accepting applications for its 2013 small grants, which support partnerships across teaching institutions. Grants can be used for inter-institutional research collaborations or for covering the costs of inter-institutional meetings. Participate in joint Division 2, 3 and 21 convention programming
Division 3 (Experimental) is teaming with Divisions 2 (Society for the Teaching of Psychology) and 21 (Applied Experimental and Engineering) on three symposia for APA's 2013 Annual Convention in Honolulu, July 31–Aug. 4:
- Psychological science and classroom learning.
- Technology innovation and science education.
- Gaming, training and lifelong learning (co-sponsored by Division 20, Adult Development and Aging).

Division 13 launches APF fund
Division 13 (Society of Consulting Psychology) has launched the Society of Consulting Psychology Fund through the American Psychological Foundation to advance empirical research on consulting and to enhance training for the current and next generations of consulting psychologists. Division 13 plans to raise $100,000 for the fund over the next five years. The fund will also provide scholarships, awards and support for early career consulting psychologists. Division 15 seeks new officers
Division 15 (Educational) is seeking nominations for president-elect, treasurer, APA council representative and member-at-large. Only current Division 15 members are eligible. - The Paul R. Pintrich Dissertation Award recognizes an outstanding dissertation completed within the last two years. - The Richard E. Snow Award for Early Contributions honors an outstanding Division 15 member who has completed his or her doctoral dissertation within the last 10 years. - The E.L. Thorndike Career Achievement Award recognizes original, empirically based research that contributes significantly to knowledge, theory or practice in educational psychology. Division 17 members win Beckman award
Division 17 (Society of Counseling Psychology) members Nancy Boyd-Franklin, PhD, Sharon Horne, PhD, and Sandra Shulman, PhD, will receive Elizabeth Hurlock Beckman Awards from the Elizabeth Hurlock Beckman Award Trust on Nov. 10 at the Carter Center in Atlanta. Horne is an associate professor of counseling and school psychology at the University of Massachusetts Boston. Boyd-Franklin is a professor at the Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey. Shulman is a consultant with the Executive Development Group in Columbus, Ohio. The award recognizes teachers who have inspired their students to do work that benefits the community.
Division 18 creates a new section on serious mental illness
Division 18 (Psychologists in Public Service) has a new section on Serious Mental Illness and Severe Emotional Disturbance. The section will be a home for psychologists who promote optimal functioning in adults living with serious psychiatric disorders and children diagnosed with severe emotional disorders. Division 18's police section honors members
The Division 18 (Psychologists in Public Service) Police and Public Safety Section honored its outstanding members during the section's miniconference on Aug. 1 in Orlando in conjunction with APA's 2012 Annual Convention. The winners are:
- Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Field of Police and Public Safety Psychology: Herb Gupton, PhD;
- Award for Outstanding Contributions to Practice in Police and Public Safety Psychology: Joel Fay, PsyD, and Mark Kamena, PhD;
- Award for Outstanding Student Research in the Field of Police and Public Safety Psychology: Ryanne Colbert.
The section's next miniconference will be July 30 in Honolulu, just before APA's 2013 Annual Convention, July 31–Aug. 4.
Divisions 28 and 50 to host May conference in Atlanta
Division 28 (Society for Psychopharmacology and Substance Use) and Division 50 (Society of Addiction Psychology) will co-host the conference "Biobehavioral Research and Implications for Practice," May 3–4, in Atlanta. Programming will focus on how advances in basic research, pharmacology, brain imaging and genetics can enhance addiction treatment and clinical outcomes. Division 32 (Society for Humanistic Psychology) is accepting proposals for its sixth annual conference, "Community in Difference: Cultivating a Home for Love and Justice in an Indifferent World," to be held Feb. 28–March 3, at the Pacifica Graduate Institute in Santa Barbara. Division 46 changes its name
Division 46 has changed its name to the Society for Media Psychology and Technology. The division made the change to clarify its long-standing mission to advance the practice and science of both media communications psychology and technology. Join online.
Division 50 will spotlight how brain research helps clinicians
Division 50 (Society of Addiction Psychology) seeks submissions that fit the theme "Applying Clinical Neuroscience to Addiction Psychology" for APA's 2013 Annual Convention in Honolulu, July 31–Aug. 4. The division offers 25 merit-based travel awards for psychologists at all career stages, particularly for speakers who will address how brain function or dysfunction can promote or impede successful behavior change, and what it means for therapy.
