President Gerald P. Koocher, PhD, honored Maj. Vicki Ingram, PsyD, at APA's 2006 Annual Convention with a presidential citation for her role in helping to establish the Defense Graduate Psychology Education (D-GPE) program.

Proposed by APA's Education Directorate, D-GPE supports the training of military and civilian psychologists who serve U.S. soldiers and their families. Congress approved D-GPE in 2005 with the help of Rep. C.W. "Bill" Young (R-Fla.). Ingram, clinical psychology internship director at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center, is a key architect of the program, which launched this year.

On presenting Ingram with the citation during the Education Advocacy Breakfast, Koocher said, "For a modest $3.4 million, not only will psychology students and psychologists receive training, but many military personnel and their families across the country will receive much needed mental health services."
