WASHINGTON — The American Psychological Association today announced the appointment of publishing executive Susan J. A. Harris to lead its growing journal program as Senior Director, Journals. The APA currently publishes 45 journals in psychology and the behavioral sciences.
"We are very pleased that Susan Harris has joined the APA publishing program," said Gary R. VandenBos, PhD, APA Publisher. "She is a seasoned professional with a wide-range of experience in STM publishing in both the not-for-profit and for-profit sectors. Her knowledge and skills will bring an added dimension to our strategic planning, as well as facilitate our implementation of new production systems and allow us to maximize staff potential. The APA membership, as well as the membership of the APA divisions and Societies publishing under the APA imprint, the Educational Publishing Foundation, will benefit from her appointment.
Ms. Harris has been involved in STM publishing, technical writing, and printing for her entire career. Most recently, she was the Executive Publisher for Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, managing a portfolio of 32 society and 18 proprietary journals. She has also served as the Group Publisher (at LWW) for the American Heart Association, as Vice President and Corporate Officer for Baltimore-based Publicity Engravers, and, prior to that, as technical editor and writer in the defense contracting consulting industry.
Ms. Harris earned her BA with highest honors in English from San Jose State University. She took additional coursework there in the Master's program, and has completed most of the coursework for her MBA at the College of Notre Dame in Baltimore.
Her appointment is effective September 2, 2003.
