The American Psychological Association (APA) announces the publication of the inaugural issue of Psychological Trauma: Theory, Research, Practice, and Policy, the official journal of APA Division 56, The Division of Trauma Psychology. The journal is edited by Steve Gold, PhD, who is the current president of Division 56, and a professor at Nova Southeastern University (NSU) Center for Psychological Studies in Fort Lauderdale, FL.
To be published on a quarterly basis, Psychological Trauma: Theory, Research, Practice, and Policy is designed to disseminate up-to-date, accurate, and professionally useful information about psychological trauma.
The premiere issue features articles such as Neuropsychiatric Symptoms of Complex Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: A Preliminary Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory Scale to Identify Adult Survivors of Childhood Abuse; The Gender Debate About Intimate Partner Violence: Solutions and Dead Ends; Childhood Trauma, Attachment, and Abuse by Multiple Partners; and Psychological Trauma and Physical Health: A Psychoneuroimmunology Approach to Etiology of Negative Health Effects and Possible Interventions.
According to editor Gold, the journal aims to "provide better understanding of the underlying principles leading to the development of psychopathology, impairment, and distress as well as factors leading to improved psychological adjustment and physical health." He adds that "Psychological Trauma: Theory, Research, Practice, and Policy will bring a specifically psychological voice to the interdisciplinary discourse on trauma, blending science, practice, and a commitment to human welfare."
Psychological Trauma Associate Editor Christine Courtois states, "The pervasiveness and importance of psychological trauma remain largely unappreciated; the knowledge base about trauma, although vast, has not received the attention in professional training programs that it should."
In addition to psychologists, Gold notes, the journal will appeal to other professionals as well—including those who study and treat victims of rape, domestic violence, child abuse, sexual abuse, physical abuse, combat, torture, community violence, and occupational traumatic stress.
Psychological Trauma: Theory, Research, Practice, and Policy is the newest journal from APA, which currently publishes 56 journals. "This journal will be welcomed by clinicians and researchers alike," predicts Gary VandenBos, PhD, APA's Publisher. "The scholarship about trauma is not yet in psychology's mainstream, but it should be," says VandenBos. With the introduction of the new journal, he notes, "cutting-edge research about trauma with its treatment will now get wider dissemination that it deserves."
Complete information about Psychological Trauma: Theory, Research, Practice, and Policy including editorial board members, manuscript submissions, and subscription rates, is available on the journal's website.
APA will provide publishing services for the print journal and electronic access through PsycARTICLES®, APA's full-text electronic database. Electronic access will include all articles, beginning with Volume 1, Issue 1, published in the journal.
