Current Initiative: Racial/Ethnic Minority Health Disparities

    The primary goal of the current proposal is to continue CEMRRAT’s support of a multiracial, interorganizational, coalition-building, national Leadership Development Institute (LDI) sponsored by the Coalition of National Racial and Ethnic Psychological Associations (CONREPA) and in collaboration with the Society of Counseling Psychology. The LDI is a yearlong, experiential and didactic training program that cultivates culturally grounded leadership skills and experiences within a cohort of emerging leaders of color across seven national psychological associations.

Training: Professional Development/Linguistic Minorities

    The Heritage Speaker Support (HSS) Scholarship Program addresses the critical need for Spanish-speaking mental health providers who can off culturally and linguistically responsive services to Spanish-speaking communities in the United States. The program is designed to empower psychology trainees who identify as bicultural heritage speakers of Spanish, many of whom have a deep cultural knowledge of Latinidad, but who may have significant gaps in their Spanish skill set due to discriminatory policies and practices and pressures to assimilate. Access to mental health-specific Spanish language training, peer support, advocacy coaching, and professional mentoring are included in the scholarship.

    This training project is proposed to expand services to monolingual Spanish-speaking individuals, children, and adolescents, and mixed language status families. It involves acquiring Spanish assessments, and intervention materials, translating existing resources, and providing interpreter will enhance students' cultural competence and provide comprehensive training. The practicum addresses the mental health needs of linguistic minorities, while enhancing the training of clinical psychology doctoral students.

Students: Undergraduate/Graduate Innovation

    The field of developmental psychology has recently called for a paradigm shift to amplify marginalized voices. The proposed project (OUR DP) outlines a 25-week undergraduate research training program at Texas State University aimed at providing a community of scholarship, multicultural training, and professional development for ethnic minority students. Twelve ethnic minority fellows will join six research labs and gain hands-on research experience in minoritized youth development, attend training sessions, and conduct and present research.

    Division 35's “Pathways through Feminist Psychology” Task Force seeks to replicate an initiative designed to demystify the psychological field for high school students of color, which was successfully piloted at the 2023 APA Convention. We intend to support a new group of high school students of color beginning their psychology journeys by covering all 2024 APA Convention costs, including APA student membership fees, registration for the convention, meals, and vetted chaperones.

    Following the successful implementation of Psych for Peace and Justice 2023, Psych for Peace and Justice 2024 will be a free, virtual conference for high schoolers, students and researchers studying psychology to affect social change through scholarship-activism. Presenters will display their research, lead workshops, and hold dialogues centering solutions to meet the psychological needs of marginalized communities and to encourage psychologists to engage in projects outside of their traditional roles.

    The Clinical Psychology Program (SOPP) at Wright State University's goal is to increase enrollment of BIPOC students in Ohio graduate programs. The CEMRRAT2 funds will be used to create the SOPP Clinical Psychology Ambassador Initiative in which SOPP ambassadors will partner with select Ohio undergraduate programs to provide knowledge and mentorship to BIPOC psychology majors regarding preparation for and application to graduate psychology programs. The initiative's mentorship circles will provide individualized and ongoing mentorship networks.

Students: STEM

    High school students, particularly minoritized students, often do not view psychology as a STEM science. These students perceive psychology as a class to be studied These students perceive psychology as a class to be studied if the career path is counseling or forensic psychology. This intensive one-week camp will provide minority students with hands on participation in a variety of experiments in subfields of psychology while actively engaging them in the research enterprise. Students will utilize sophisticated equipment to design methods to collect and analyze data.
