American Psychological Association (APA) Committee of Teachers of Psychology in Secondary Schools (TOPSS) is committed to inclusion and respect for all.

The APA TOPSS Committee is committed to inclusion and respect for all. We value the multiple perspectives deriving from differences in race/ethnicity, culture, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, religion, socioeconomic status, national origin and aging. The work of the committee and the work of teachers are both enhanced by the reflection on and consideration of a wide range of experiences and perspectives. We seek to build appreciation and respect among diverse communities and groups through our policies, programs, practices, resources and decisions.

To that end, we will:

  • Continue to review all policies and products, such as the National Standards for High School Psychology Curricula and unit lesson plans, to ensure inclusivity and respect.

  • Design and support initiatives that expose diverse groups of students and teachers to the discipline of psychological science.

  • Provide access to resources that enhance teaching and infuse diversity across the curriculum.

  • Continue to recruit minority teachers to TOPSS membership and encourage a diverse representation on the TOPSS committee.

  • Collaborate with other groups within and outside of APA to enhance relationships and build visibility.

  • Continue to work to minimize or prevent the effects of behavior based on unconscious discriminatory attitudes and biases.
