APA’s Council of Representatives met to review and decide on proposed policy for the association. In addition to updates Council received from APA’s president, CEO and treasurer, Council members had an opportunity to attend a session focused on the strategic plan update.

APA’s chief of strategy and membership, Ian King, MBA, and senior director of strategic insights, Allan Richman, PhD, presented on the strategic plan update progress and shared a summary of the data collected to date (PDF, 275KB)opens in new window. The update was well received by members of Council, with questions and comments mostly centered around the following themes:

  • acknowledging the breadth of psychological research that APA supports, including both quantitative and qualitative methods
  • considerations around focusing only on what is clearly “evidence-based” vs. emerging areas that are more “evidence-informed”
  • better understanding the demographics of who is weighing in on the strategic plan (e.g., new vs. long-time members)

This feedback will be thoughtfully considered and integrated into the strategic plan update process and the plan itself as best as possible.
