Copyright Permissions FAQs
1. What is Marketplace?
Marketplace is an online permissions service. It was created by Copyright Clearance Centeropens in new window, the world's premier provider of copyright licensing and compliance solutions. Marketplace enables users to get content and copyright permission for new articles, books, theses, and many other types of published materials.
2. How does Marketplace work?
- Locate on the APA website the journal article or book you wish to reuse. You may also go to and enter what you would like into the search box.
- Click the Permissions link associated with the article or book you have just located via the APA website. You will be redirected to the appropriate page on the Marketplace.
- Follow the simple instructions to obtain a Quick Price quotation. The price you are charged involves many variables, such as number of pages of content being reused, requester type, quantity, and a permission fee set by APA. In some cases there is no fee, but you will still obtain a permission agreement from APA. [NOTE: Some permission requests cannot be completed through Marketplace and require additional assistance from APA. If you select such a category, you will see a special instruction.]
- Click the Request Permissions link to begin the order process. To place your order, you will be prompted to set up an account or confirm/edit account information; confirm your order; confirm your payment method; and accept the terms and conditions.
- An order confirmation is displayed listing the details of your Marketplace order. It offers additional links for viewing the terms and conditions, editing your account information, and editing your order specifications.
- An email confirmation will be sent to you listing the details of your order.
3. When do you need APA permission?
Please see our policy statement for details of when you need APA permission.
Once in Marketplace the easy Quick Price process will clarify when permission is required.
It is the requesting party's responsibility to ensure that the material is original to APA and that the material was not reprinted with permission from a non-APA source.
4. Why do you need permission?
APA works are protected by the U.S. Copyright Act. It is an infringement of copyright law to reproduce/reuse/republish a copyrighted work without the prior consent of the copyright holder. The American Psychological Association is the copyright holder for APA published material unless otherwise noted. Go to https://www.copyright.gov/opens in new window to learn more about copyright law.
The requesting party is responsible for obtaining permission from APA before reproducing, reusing, or republishing any APA-copyrighted material. The requesting party is also responsible for ensuring that the material they are using is original to APA and that the material was not reprinted by APA with permission from a non-APA source.
