What do you get out of your involvement?

Headshot of Brian Yochim. Involvement in APA is fun because you get to work with colleagues around the country on projects that are helpful to the community—to students, clinical providers, and ultimately, the patients we serve. It is a fun way to meet people and is professionally rewarding. It enables you to shape the field to be the way you think it should be.

What do you value most about being a neuropsychologist?

I enjoy getting to know some of a person’s life story in the short time I get to meet with them. Similar to watching athletes perform their best at a public event, I get to watch people perform at their cognitive best in my office. It is particularly rewarding to observe someone figuring out how to solve a novel problem. Later, at a feedback session, it is rewarding to explain to patients and their families the concepts of mild cognitive impairment and dementia and various causes of these syndromes, like Alzheimer’s disease or strokes.

What are you most proud of?

Developing a new measure of word-finding which other neuropsychologists have told me they find useful.

What is your favorite place to travel to?

I love visiting our national parks, which have been called “America’s best idea.”

If you weren’t a psychologist, what would you be?

I would work in a national park, helping visitors plan their visit to make the best use of their time.

If you could time travel, what year would you go to and why?

I would want to visit Abraham Lincoln and learn about his decision-making process during the Civil War.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself

I have seen U2 in concert 16 times! I often meet other psychologists who have attended one of the same concerts I attended in the past.
