Caitlin Cavanagh How long have you been a member?
I’ve been a member of Div. 41 since my senior year of college (2010). At the time, I didn’t even know what an academic organization or conference was, but a great mentor encouraged me to submit my honors thesis as a poster. A few years later, as a doctoral student, I began volunteering on the student committee, and I’m still close with my fellow volunteers today. Since becoming faculty, I’ve served in several roles that have expanded both my personal and professional network. Seeing friends and colleagues from across the country at the annual meeting is something I look forward to every year.

Who inspires you?

My dad. He is the hardest worker I know. He navigated college without parents who had high school diplomas and worked three jobs throughout my childhood to support our family. He sacrificed a great deal for our success.

What are you or your division working on now?

We are currently engaged in strategic planning. It’s been both exciting and challenging to think about where the field is headed and how the organization can best serve its members, especially at a time when science itself feels in flux.

What advice would you offer to new members or new leaders/volunteers?

Don’t be afraid to speak up. Many of us (myself included) struggle with imposter syndrome, and it can feel intimidating to step into a new role. But your ideas are valuable and they are genuinely wanted.

What can you not live without?

Carmex! (No, they don’t sponsor me.) I have a tube in every coat pocket, bag, and room of my house.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself.

I’ve been to 58 countries and all seven continents, including Antarctica. Planning my next trip is how I unwind at the end of the day.
