Celebrating a milestone

This year, APA Division 55: Society for Prescribing Psychology celebrates its 25th anniversary

Though the movement began decades ago, only recently have we seen the fruits of our collective effort truly come to bear. Five years ago, the American Psychological Association formally recognized Clinical Psychopharmacology as a specialty in psychology—a major victory that validates years of hard work and sets the stage for future growth.

Paving the Way for National Standards

As a division, we are actively engaged in advancing our specialty. A revision of the APA Guidelines for Psychologists’ Involvement in Pharmacological Issues is in process and is currently out for public comment. Division 55 is also in the process of requesting the formation of a new American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP) specialty board dedicated solely to Clinical Psychopharmacology. This will ensure high standards practice, reinforce professional identity, and promote quality care for patients nationwide.

Supporting Research

Over the past few years, Division 55 has actively supported research in the field. The Research Council held a Research Rendezvous event that brought together promising researchers whose work highlights the safety and effectiveness of prescribing psychologists in action. In states like New Mexico and Louisiana, where prescriptive authority has been in place for over 20 years, prescribing psychologists have become vital contributors to mental health care—helping to lower suicide rates and expand access in underserved communities. We remain committed to empowering emerging professionals. Recently, we’ve provided research support for young investigators and awarded APA travel grants to students presenting posters on psychopharmacology. These grants offer students a platform to share ideas, gain feedback, and connect with mentors and peers.

Growing National Momentum

Currently, seven states have enacted prescriptive authority laws and approximately 21 additional states are working toward similar legislation. Division 55 stands ready to assist, providing advocacy, legislative testimony, and letter-writing support to assist states as they navigate this transformative process.

Honoring Our Legacy, Forging Our Future

As we mark 25 years of advocacy, growth, and scientific advancement, we honor the pioneers who believed in the promise of prescribing psychology. Their passion laid the foundation for a movement that will provide access to pharmacotherapy in underserved communities. We move forward with renewed energy, continuing to push boundaries, support excellence, and serve those who rely on us for hope, healing, and integrative care.
