Why did you join the division?

Jeanne M. Slattery, PhD I joined Division 31 because, as president of Pennsylvania Psychological Association (PPA), I wanted to know what other states were doing to address the pressing issues that many state, provincial, and territorial associations (SPTA) are facing now.

How long have you been a member?

I’m a newbie, so am learning on the job. This is my third year as a Division 31 member.

How did you become a division volunteer or leader?

I was coming off from my year as president of PPA, and there was a call for volunteers. I had more free time at that point, knew that I like serving in ways that can make a difference, and that nominations committees have a difficult time filling their slate. I didn’t expect to be elected.

What do you get out of your involvement?

I’ve gained good colleagues, a stronger and wider view of the issues facing psychology and SPTAs throughout the country, and an up-to-date knowledge of the changes that psychology is going through now.

What does a typical workday look like for you?

I primarily identify as a professor of undergraduate students, so spend a considerable amount of my day teaching, preparing to teach, advising students, and because I’m part of my department’s leadership team, in meetings.

Who inspires you?

I have been inspired by and mentored by my students and by many colleagues at my university and in PPA, especially Linda Knauss, Sam Knapp, and Crystal Park.

What advice would you offer to new members or new leaders/volunteers?

Volunteer. It’s worth it on so many levels.

What can you not live without?

Reading, talking to people, believing I’m making a difference. Looking for a recommendation on what to read? Ask me.
