How did you become a division volunteer or leader?

Headshot of Joyce Yip Green. I became involved with the Society for Global Psychology (SGP) as a doctoral student in international psychology at The Chicago School, where I had the opportunity to serve as a student ambassador for the president of the Psychological Association of the Philippines during the APA 2017 Convention’s Mini-Summit that brought together national leaders of psychology associations around the world. After graduating, I joined SGP/Division 52 and have since served in several roles, including convention co-chair, newsletter Eeitor, and now vice president of communications and publications.

What does a typical workday look like for you?

There’s rarely a “typical” day, but it generally includes teaching and mentoring graduate students, research and writing, and collaborating on community-based projects. I also maintain a telehealth practice, which informs my teaching and scholarship. In between, I’m often driving my teenager to and from school and sports practices, so my days are a good mix of professional, clinical, and family life.

What are you or your division working on now?

We are in an exciting period of growth as we transition to the Society for Global Psychology, deepening our role as a meeting place for global perspectives. We are advancing this work through our outreach to international members, a new book series, a webinar series focused on Latin America and the Caribbean, and by strengthening the division’s journal: International Perspectives in Psychology.

What advice would you offer to new members or new leaders/volunteers?

Don’t be afraid to approach your heroes. They’re more approachable than you may think. Show up, stay connected, and be willing to step into opportunities as they come.

If you could time travel, what year would you go to and why?

1990 was my year. This was the predigital era where we still went to movie theaters and played outside until it got dark. It was the start of grunge and streetwear, a time for Doc Martens, MC Hammer and Edward Scissorhands. To be young again!
