Why did you join the division?
I joined APA Division 27, because I am interested in applying its tenets of community research and action with those who are marginalized in society to produce positive systematic changes in their lives and environmental settings. Moreover, my intent was to establish collaborations with other community psychology researchers with similar interests.
How long have you been a member?
I have been a long-standing member of APA, Division 27, the Society for Community Action and Research (SCRA)—Community Psychology, for more than 20 years.
How did you become a division volunteer or leader?
While I was presenting my community psychology research student poster session at an annual, APA, Division 27—SCRA, Ecological Psychology Conference (ECO), I was invited to volunteer to assist with the development of future SCRA conferences.
What do you get out of your involvement?
It is both rewarding and inspiring to serve with all members of APA Division 27. I have the opportunity to address ailing societal problems collectively with members of the Division as well as APA and other organizations to modify colonial practices such as Anti-Blackness programming.
What are you or your division working on now?
Division 27 is currently working to establish a strategic planning subcommittee that will focus on collective healing and restorative processes.
What advice would you offer to new members or new leaders/volunteers?
New members should select one SCRA council, interest group or committee to start that they are most interested in to volunteer and connect with other likeminded members prior to possibly adding others.
What is your favorite place to travel to? What is next on our travel list?
My favorite place to travel to is Florida to enjoy the beautiful beaches. Hawaii is next on my travel list.
