Publications and Communications Board: 2015 Annual Report

The Publications and Communications Board (P&C) and the Office of Publications and Databases (OPD) addressed challenges and opportunities surrounding changes in the scholarly publishing and current economic climates to finish the year meeting its publishing goals for electronic resources, books, videos, and journals.

Under the direction of the P&C Board and to fulfill APA's global mission of disseminating psychological science, the Office of Publications and Databases maintained a solid performance in terms of production and improved services for print and electronic alike. Total revenue for APA's core scholarly and professional publishing program (APA Journals, APA Books, Publication Manual, PsycINFO, PsycARTICLES, PsycTESTS, PsycTHERAPY, PsycBOOKS, PsycEXTRA, PsycCRITIQUES, and the PsycNET platform) totaled slightly nearly $90 million in 2015.

  • 226, 057 records were released into the PsycINFO database in 2015, bringing the total number of records in the database to more than 4 million. The 4 millionth entry indexed was "The Effect of Unpredictable Early Childhood Environments on Parenting in Adulthood"by Ohad Szepsenwol, Jeffry A. Simpson, Vladas Griskevicius and K. Lee Raby, in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Vol. 109(6), Dec. 2015. In addition, 8,264,094 cited references were released, bringing the total number of cited references in the database to 82,950,547. The number of journals covered by PsycINFO at the end of 2015 was 2,570.
  • The PsycTESTS database grew by 7,518 new records, totaling 32.750 records by the end of the year. Because PsycTESTS has seen tremendous growth in the market, a decision was made to shift resources from PsycEXTRA to PsycTESTS and implement new strategies that would grow both content and revenues.
  • PsycARTICLES includes "Online First Publication"articles within 30 days after the accepted manuscripts have been received at APA, and these are designated as the "versions of record." More than 3,400 articles were released as Online First Publication between January and December 2015, and approximately 3,500 articles "graduated"to bound issues in this same time frame.
  • APA continued to add both classic and APA books to PsycBOOKS, including the new addition of the APA Handbooks. There are now 1,100 APA books plus 3,175 classic books on psychology in the database. At the end of the year, PsycBOOKS contained 4,261 books and 63,835 chapters.
  • Re-evaluation of the PsycEXTRA database to identify opportunities for greater utility of resources resulted in the decision to make that database an archive for APA and APA-related content only. 16,602 records were added to PsycEXTRA in 2015.
  • The PsycCRITIQUES database featuring book and film reviews ended the year with 42,009 records in total, having added 521 records in 2015.

  • PsycINFO staff continued to expand the use of social media to inform the world about APA's electronic databases and the APA PsycNET platform. The staff have posted regular comments on Facebook© (https://www.facebook.com/APAPsycNETopens in new window) and Twitter© (https://www.twitter.com/APAPsycNETopens in new window).
  • Customer Relations launched the APA Databases & Electronic Resources Blog (https://blog.apapubs.orgopens in new window) on November 30, 2015. The blog, which replaces the PsycINFO News newsletter, had more than 1,500 views in December 2015. Staff are using it to promote training opportunities and materials, new publications and database features, and other information of interest to librarians, students, faculty and individual database subscribers.
  • Customer Relations maintains two YouTube© channels, one dedicated to APA PsycNET and the other dedicated to our vendor platforms. YouTube views of the APA database training videos jumped to an all-time high of 58,462 in 2015 – an increase of about 10 percent compared to 2014.
  • Staff continued to expand the database training program with webinars and on-site training at conferences. By the end of the year, staff had provided direct training to 537 participants, most of whom were librarians, students, and faculty. Participants represented more than 400 institutions.
  • The APA Librarian Conference Travel Awards were created in 2015 to help librarians defray the cost of attending conferences. The first award cycle (for conferences in 2016) opened on September 1, 2015. Eight librarians applied and one was selected to receive a $750 cash award to partially fund attendance at the Electronic Resources & Libraries conference in April. This was the first of three travel awards that will be presented during 2016.
  • Customer Relations staff collaborated with APA Books, Marketing, and ITS to support the continuing development efforts and planned spring 2016 launch of the APA Style® CENTRAL (ASC). Customer Relations staff planned, coordinated, and executed all user-testing related activities of the ASC Alpha-Testing effort that was conducted in December 2015. The user-centric ASC alpha-testing effort enabled the Office of Publications & Databases (OPD) to more effectively reach its goal of designing and delivering innovative electronic products that will be successful in a highly competitive marketplace.
  • Customer Relations staff developed and coordinated APA Style® CENTRAL training for the APA Marketing and Sales staff prior to the soft launch at the ALA Midwinter meeting in January, gave demonstrations of the application, and also began preparations for the ASC Beta-Testing effort schedule for January 2016.
  • The APA Library Advisory Council met twice in 2015. Among their discussion items were the current state of the academic library; institutional directives impacting product acquisition; working with faculty; changes roles in librarianship; use of data mining at academic institutions; use of video in research and instruction; online piracy; and PsycINFO journal coverage. The group also provided actionable feedback on the new APA Style® CENTRAL.
