Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks is awarded an APA Presidential Citation for her lifelong commitment to expanding access to health care and behavioral healthcare, advancing civil rights, and investing in underserved communities. Her 26-year career as a public servant has helped improve the lives of hundreds of thousands of people in Prince George’s County and across the State of Maryland.

As the youngest and first woman to be elected the County’s State’s Attorney in 2010, Alsobrooks’ record demonstrates she understands the critical need to invest in mental health and substance use disorder care and other resources to support residents before they interact with the criminal justice system.

After being elected as the first female Prince George’s County Executive in 2018, she invested $20 million to open the county’s first behavioral health facility, so residents could receive mental health and substance use disorder treatment in a facility that is conducive to healing and befitting their dignity. In addition, she invested funding to create mobile crisis response teams and open a crisis stabilization center, so residents and families have other avenues to seek help for mental health crises rather than calling the police.

Alsobrooks has also focused on expanding access to health care overall for Prince George’s County. She helped secure state funding to build the county’s first free-standing cancer center. She also invested funding in the county budget to replace the county health department’s aging health center, which will allow the department to expand health services for residents in a new, state-of-the-art building.

Alsobrooks has been a strong supporter of public education as county executive, investing historic amounts of funding in the county’s public school system. In addition, she advocated for an innovative, first-of-its-kind school construction program that has helped the county break ground on 10 new schools in the past three years. She also supported the expansion of comprehensive health care services into public schools, including telehealth, dental, and vision services.

Alsobrooks was born and raised in Prince George’s County, Maryland, and is a lifelong Prince Georgian and Marylander. She graduated with a BA in public policy from Duke University and a JD from the University of Maryland School of Law. Alsobrooks began her career as a Prince George’s County Assistant State’s Attorney in 1997, eventually becoming the county’s first full-time prosecutor assigned to handle domestic violence cases.

For her lifelong service to the residents of Prince George’s County and commitment to improving access to high-quality education, safe communities, and comprehensive health care services, I am honored to present her with this Presidential Citation.
