Francisco J. Sánchez, PhD, was recognized with a Presidential Citation for his steadfast commitment to advancing psychology’s values of diversity and social justice through his research, teaching and professional service.
Sánchez's transformative research is exploring the biopsychological basis of gender identity and sexual orientation, a rare combination among scholars in psychological science, and he is translating these findings to medical and mental health professionals and policy makers. Sánchez is also serving the profession with distinction through multiple roles in APA and Divisional governance and is serving as a catalyst for enhancing psychologists’ ability to address the needs of diverse communities, evidenced by his long-term leadership in substantively helping to plan three National Multicultural Conference and Summits (NMCS) and fulfilling the role as NMCS historian, and his exemplary, tireless dedication and commitment to his program and students.
