Glenda Russell, PhD, was awarded a 2019 APA Presidential Citation in recognition of her research, clinical work, community service and mentorship to other professionals.
Russell’s research in the aftermath of Colorado’s 1992 Amendment Two campaign, communicated through her book Voted Out and her article “Surviving and thriving in the midst of anti-gay politics,” increased understanding of sexual stigma, the impact of anti-lesbian, gay and bisexual policies and climates on mental health, and the processes of resilience. Her clinical services, supervision and training have increased the knowledge of sociopolitical trauma and resilience and the role of allies in the psychological well-being of LGBT individuals and communities. She has been exemplary in reaching out to communities and policy-makers to bring tools and concrete strategies to reduce discrimination and oppression at all levels and build resiliency against the inevitable negative effects of sexual stigma, work that has been acknowledged in her home community with community service awards from Boulder and Denver chapters of PFLAG and the Big Hearts Award for service to the LGBT community from Boulder Pride. She has encouraged and mentored others to become similarly involved and her unique path as scientist, practitioner and activist has inspired many.
