Michael Hendricks, PhD, was awarded a Presidential Citation for his critical work on behalf of transgender and other gender nonconforming individuals.
An internationally recognized expert in theoretical, evaluative and treatment concerns for transgender and other gender nonconforming individuals, Hendricks developed the Minority Stress Model for clinical work with this population and presented it to a broad readership in his seminal article (co-authored with Rylan J. Testa, PhD) in Professional Psychology: Research and Practice®. This model provided the foundation for further research and for legal briefs addressing the mental health needs of transgender people. Hendricks brings his expertise in suicide assessment and management to this particularly vulnerable population. His dedication to the needs of gender nonconforming clients in particular, and LGBT clients more broadly, is evidenced by his participation in the World Professional Association for Transgender Health and in the writing group developing guidelines for the treatment of transgender and gender nonconforming individuals. Hendricks is past president of Div. 44 (Society for the Psychologicy of Sexual Orientation and Gender Diversity).
