Joseph L. White, PhD, was awarded a Presidential Citation for his distinguished career as a psychologist devoted to social justice and committed to racial, gender and cultural equality.

This citation acknowledges and honors White's distinguished life-long contributions to psychology as a social justice advocate, mentor, educator, scholar, clinician, leader and friend. Upon receiving his doctorate in clinical psychology in 1961 from Michigan State University, White embarked on a career guided by a principle of “giving back” to the community through knowledge and scholarship. White's numerous books, articles and his seminal manuscript, “Toward a Black Psychology” published by Ebony magazine in 1970, were instrumental in beginning the modern era of African-American psychology. In addition, White's unwavering commitment and devotion, throughout his career, to developing, training and producing exceptional psychologists in general, and psychologists of color in particular, has prepared the field for the 21st century and beyond. It is of little wonder that White has been honored and respected by all those who have been fortunate to have had the opportunity to interact with him. Psychology is significantly enriched by his insightful leadership and extraordinary career.
