About APA

Stephen R. McCutcheon, PhD, was awarded a Presidential Citation in recognition of his influential contributions, collaborative leadership and extensive service to the education and training community in professional psychology.

A tireless advocate for quality training, McCutcheon has served in a variety of leadership roles, including chair of the Council of Chairs of Training Councils, the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Psychology Training Council and the APA Presidential Task Force entitled "Opening Doors Summit: Facilitating Transitions From Doctoral Education to First Job," as well as an executive committee member of the Commission on Accreditation. In these roles, he skillfully and artfully brings together individuals and organizations with diverse and often-conflicting views to have productive, meaningful and "courageous" conversations. His scholarly contributions and leadership activities have been influential in the competencies movement and in addressing the internship supply and demand imbalance. As the internship and postdoctoral training director at the VA Puget Sound Health Care System in Seattle, he is a beloved supervisor, teacher and mentor.
