Mike Martin, PhD, was awarded a Presidential Citation for his commitment to caring for Veterans and training the next generation of psychologists.
After graduating from Auburn University with his PhD in counseling psychology in 1999, Martin worked on a research project in Fort Benning, Georgia, where he first became interested in military and Veterans issues. Martin joined the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) in 2007 where he now serves as the psychology executive of the Atlanta VA Medical Center. Martin also currently serves as an assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Emory University School of Medicine and has served as an adjunct professor at Clayton State University.
Throughout his career, Martin has been dedicated to mentoring and training psychology interns and postdoctoral fellows. Martin has served on the Psychology Training Advisory Board at the Atlanta VA Medical Center since 2009 as well as serving as the codirector of the Atlanta VA Psychology Training Program from 2007-12. From 2001-07, Martin was the psychology training director at the Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute for Rehabilitation. Martin even continues to mentor psychology undergraduates at his alma mater, Marquette University.
Martin chaired the VA Psychology Leadership Conference Planning Committee in 2018 and 2019, bringing together hundreds of VA psychologists and trainees, informing on innovative practices across the VA system, and giving trainees the opportunity to meet psychology leaders.
I am pleased to award a Presidential Citation to Martin for his service to Veterans, psychology trainees, and APA.
