M. Ellen Mitchell, PhD, was awarded a Presidential Citation for her leadership in mental health, groundbreaking scholarship and career-long service to the profession. 

Full professor and interim dean, Lewis College of Human Sciences, Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT), Mitchell launched a new college of psychology, humanities and social science and has overseen operations for the Center for Ethics in the Professions, Disability Resource Center, IIT Leadership Academy and Kedge Program. She has been consulting editor, Journal of Assessment: A Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, and deputy director and senior fellow, Institute for Science Law & Technology, Institute for Biotechnology and the Human Future, and Center on Nanotechnology and Society Kent College of Law. Her scholarship focuses on relationships as moderators of outcomes, depression among people coping with divorce, social skills and team effectiveness, predictors of estrangement and human issues in emerging technologies. An active Council of Graduate Departments of Psychology leader, she models “service with a smile” and champions strong organizational governance and citizenship. She deftly encourages young and seasoned faculty to engage in faculty governance and good governance practices.
