APA President Nadine Kaslow (left) with Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton, D-D.C., and APA CEO Norman B. Anderson at the Oct. 31, 2014, presentation of an APA Presidential Citation to Norton. “I have had the good fortune to do what I went to law school to do. To work to protect human rights,” Norton said upon accepting the award. The citation honored Norton for her five decades of “leadership to achieve positive social change through civil rights activism to protect ethnic minorities and women from discrimination and to promote equal opportunities for all.” The first woman to chair the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, Norton led the release of the first set of regulations that defined sexual harassment and declared it a form of sexual discrimination that violated federal civil rights laws.
