Tracey Smith, PhD, was awarded a 2019 APA Presidential Citation for her leadership, service and advocacy to improve the lives of our nation’s military veterans.  

Smith has spent her career as a psychologist ensuring that veterans in distress receive high-quality, effective, evidence-based psychotherapies. Serving as the Department of Veterans Affairs national psychotherapy coordinator in Mental Health Services, Smith oversaw policy, planning and implementation of evidence-based psychotherapies throughout the VA system. She also has brought her commitment to changing mental health clinicians’ behavior to the VA’s Mental Illness, Research, Education and Clinical Center in Houston, Texas as Associate Director for Improving Clinical Care.  

Smith also serves as the current President of the Association of VA Psychologist Leaders and in this role, she brings her expertise, tenacity and commitment to inspire not only her fellow VA psychologists, but also members of Congress seeking to improve national systems of mental health care for veterans.
